Every marketer has asked: why do some Instagram giveaways collect thousands of comments while others go unnoticed? Why does a contest with a luxury prize sometimes lose to a simple coffee giveaway?
The SOM team conducted a large-scale study to find the answers. Over eight months, we analyzed 17,289 contests from 5,888 organizers. The results were surprising even for us.
Reels vs. Static Posts: The Unexpected Paradox
The first thing that stands out is the striking contrast between format popularity and actual efficiency.
Reels contests collect an average of 38.4% more comments. However, 61.2% of brands still prefer static posts out of habit and ease of production.
“Why is this happening? Most likely due to the inertia of thinking and the complexity of video production. However, the data clearly shows: if your goal is maximum participation, Reels must be your priority.”
The Magic Rule of Three
The common belief is “the simpler, the better.” But the data proves that exactly 3 conditions create the optimal balance of engagement.
| Number of Conditions | Average Number of Comments |
|---|---|
| 0 Conditions | 237 |
| 1 Condition | 661 |
| 2 Conditions | 1,034 |
| 3 Conditions (Optimum) ✓ | 1,587 |
| 4+ Conditions | 1,481 |
The Ideal Combination: 1. Account Subscription (53.2% of contests), 2. Story Repost (viral spread), 3. Comment tagging friends (reach boost).
Emojis: An Underrated Tool
One of the most surprising findings: posts with emojis collect 30 times more comments.
The Anatomy of the Perfect Text
Optimal Length: 200–500 characters. Contests with this description length collect an average of 1,445 comments.
Effective Trigger Phrases:
| Phrase | Average Comments | Usage Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| “Giving away” | 1,708 | 24.7% |
| “Win” | 1,535 | 29.0% |
| “Subscribe” | 1,531 | 53.2% |
Choosing the Prize: Category Performance
| Prize Category | Num. of Contests | Average Comments |
|---|---|---|
| Food & Drinks 🍕 | 2,836 | 1,347 |
| Fashion & Accessories | 1,980 | 1,331 |
| Cosmetics | 1,275 | 1,098 |
| Gift Certificates | 1,144 | 1,144 |
| Cash Prizes | 4,329 | 983 |
The iPhone Phenomenon
iPhone remains the most desired prize. Although only 57 such contests were recorded, the average number of comments was 11,165! That is 9 times higher than the overall average.
Cost Per Participant Analysis (iPhone Giveaway):
| Prize Value (Est.) | Participants | Cost Per Participant |
|---|---|---|
